Crossbows And How They Work In Hunting Situations

December 14, 2009 · Filed Under Archery

First we should consider the laws that are used in many places for the materials we are going to talk about. That said when you are looking for a useful hunting tool you should see what a crossbow has to offer you. To shoot out arrows properly this tool must work with different materials making a crossbow truly unique. Although it will help to understand the different parts of a crossbow.

This is a sturdy material that works as an archery tool. What happens is that a bow is mounted onto a mechanism that supports a string. An arrow can be loaded onto the bow and the mechanism can be lifted backwards. This is to get the string to be moved backwards. A trigger will then work to force the string to be released so that an arrow can be fired.

Most crossbows have aiming sights already attached to them. The various materials used are so strong that it makes it easy to install solid sights. The sights help you zero in on a target before firing. Scope mounted sights are becoming more popular to help gain better aim for accuracy at longer distances.

Light carbon and composite materials are used for making crossbow bolts. These rigid projectiles are usually kept below one pound because of the material they are constructed out of. Good arrow trajectory is the result of proper arrow materials. Each crossbow is different in its own way and will perform better with different arrows or bolts.

To reach the maximum FPS or feet per second rate that a crossbow can shoot is usually the most desired aspect of choosing a crossbow. It is critical for you to know the right combination of crossbow poundage and minimum arrow weight to avoid injury or damaging your crossbow. If you follow the manufactures suggestions you will not have a problem and you will probably be shooting at speeds in excess of 300 FPS.

150 pound draw weights on crossbows are not uncommon today. Draw weight is the rated poundage of the crossbow that propels the string forward when fired. The right draw weight and the right arrow combination will produce your maximum feet per second.

Today most crossbows are under four feet in length and under ten pounds. There are many variations of crossbows that offer you many different features.

Before you buy a crossbow it would be in your best interest to look up the laws pertaining to owning and hunting with a crossbow in your state. All states and provinces have game laws that limit what you can legally hunt using crossbows. Some states only allow the use of crossbows if you have a disability. Draw weights can be limited also for example the state of Ohio only allow draw weights under 200 pounds.

Crossbows are fun and work in many scenarios which makes them very versatile tools. Just be sure to check the legality of your usage of a crossbow and arrow before you buy.
